The altitude is real. Plan for it and it's not a problem.
At 6,035 feet, Colorado Springs sits high enough that most people notice a difference, especially in the first two to four weeks after arriving from lower elevation. The same walk costs about 10–15% more energy. Shortness of breath on a gentle slope is normal, not a fitness problem. Dehydration happens faster and with fewer warning signs.
None of that means staying inside. It means planning your first outdoor sessions shorter and less ambitious than your fitness level would suggest, drinking more water than you think you need, and wearing sun protection that you'd be less careful about at sea level.
Long-term residents adapt fully and the altitude becomes an advantage — training at 6,000 feet builds red blood cell count in a way that benefits performance across the board. The adjustment window is a few weeks, and it's worth taking seriously rather than powering through.
Energy cost
Expect to work 10–15% harder for the same pace you maintained at lower elevation. This normalises after 2–4 weeks.
Hydration
Drink water before you feel thirsty. At altitude with dry air, the dehydration-thirst lag is significant. Plan for 20% more than your usual intake during outdoor activity.
Sun protection
UV intensity at altitude is roughly 25% higher than sea level. SPF 30+ on any exposed skin is the right baseline, year-round. The winter sun here is not gentle.
Sleep in the first week
Some people experience disrupted sleep in the first few days at altitude. This typically resolves within a week. Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol in the first few days helps.
Warning signs to take seriously
Persistent headache, unusual breathlessness at rest, or coordination problems at 6,000+ feet are worth a medical conversation, not pushing through. Altitude sickness is real even at this elevation for some people.
